HTTYD tops noms for 38th Annual “Annie” Awards!

Okay, okay…so the "Annie’s" aren’t the Oscars. What they are is an award given by the International Animated Film Association at their yearly award show. The ceremony has been held since 1972, and until this year, Disney had sponsored the awards every year since it’s creation.

BUT since Disney/Pixar left the sponsoring organization this past summer, Dreamworks Animation is now pretty much the 300lb gorilla in the room.

Consequently, the announcement that they have topped the list of nominations this year, with more than 10 nods, including BEST VOICE ACTING IN A FEATURE PRODUCTION….GERARD BUTLER (for Stoick the Vast-but if you didn’t know that, why are you reading this blog? Go back and start at the beginning.) AND JOHN POWELL FOR MUSIC IN A FEATURE PRODUCTION!!

Doin’ the Demented Poodle Dance! Gah, this awards season is going to be tougher than usual!

Anyway…the question has become, has Disney/Pixar’s withdrawal and refusal to participate (even though Toy Story 3 has been nominated for Best Animated Feature,) rendered the whole thing moot? Did D/P leave because of their dissatisfaction with the judging process or was it because they were  afraid of not being the BMOC this year??  It’s possible. Dreamworks has arguably their best chance at upsetting the mighty Pixar than they’ve ever had before.

I’ve already documented my thoughts on this issue. In a year without Toy Story 3, HTTYD would be the runaway favorite. As it is, it still has more than a good chance for an upset at the 2 big dances, the Golden Globes and the Oscars. (It’s entirely possible that there could be a TS3 backlash between now and the closing bells.) I do believe both TS3 and HTTYD will be nominated for every award for which they are eligible, save one. I still believe that Toy Story 3 will make it to the hallowed ranks of Best Picture nominee and if so, that will give HTTYD the edge for a Best Animated Film upset.

(Uncle Peter! It’s still only December!)
